Unfortunate Circumstances part 1
By J.R.
The whole situation had gotten out of hand. I was so upset, I didn't really even know what to do. I was still sitting on my floor, in the same position I had been in for almost an hour, listening to the commotion outside of my bedroom door and wondering when someone was going to come in again. I just wanted them all to go away. I didn't really want to hurt myself, I wasn't going to do anything crazy or drastic. It was just supposed to be a BLOG entry about the SUBJECT! About how much life can suck sometimes. Nobody every understood me..especially my stupid, over-dramatic roommate. He was such a dumbass I couldn't stand it. Always taking everything too seriously and freaking out about the dumbest little things. I guess having everything handed to you your whole life made you like that..it made me sick. Unfortunately for me, though it was my dumbass roomie who saw the blog entry before anyone else, and before I was ready to publish it. I was such an idiot for leaving my laptop on the coffee table, but I just went out to run a few errands and when I came home I found my roommate waiting with three local police officers. THREE cops! Over a stupid blog entry!! My roommate had no idea what he was reading and took everything to seriously.
"Brad, " he said when I came in, "are...are you really going to hurt yourself?" "WHAT!?" I had responded. "NO! What is the matter with you!?" The problem was, instead of calmly and rationally talking to my stupid ass roommate and the cops, I completely flipped out. I was so mad at how shitty everything had been going for me lately and how much he had over reacted that I screamed at him in front of the police, and they got even more worried about me. The whole ordeal had finally ended with me fighting with the cops, and barricading myself in my room, sitting down on my floor and refusing to talk to them anymore. They had basically accused me of being dangerous, to myself and to "the community" and said they weren't going to leave with me like that. I told them they were ridiculous and needed to leave me alone. The problem was that my fucking roomie could be very convincing, and he kept talking to them outside of my room. I couldn't make out everything they were saying, but I heard him repeatedly use the word "worried" and "unsafe." I could have killed him. If i was going to hurt anyone it would definitely have been him! I couldn't believe what he had done, and now I was scared, upset, and incredibly embarrassed. I finally sat down on my floor, against the bed and tried to think of what to do. I glimpsed at myself in the mirror...I was wearing faded dark jeans, a white wifebeater shirt, and my workboots. I thought about leaving through my own window but realized my sweatshirt was out in the living room where I had thrown it when I came home..it would be too cold to just go running outside, and they'd probably just think I was really crazy if I did that. I was trapped! The commotion outside died down a little and I began to get lost in my own thoughts...never did I think I'd be in this situation when I had woken up that morning!
Just then the door opened. As if I didn't already feel completely helpless and embarrassed, two of the most handsome, young, muscular EMT's I have ever seen walked into the room. One was slightly taller than the other. Both men were wearing tight, dark blue uniform pants with tight dark blue snap-up EMS uniform shirts, and tall, shiny, polished rocky trooper boots with side zippers. Both men were incredibly muscular, their arms and chests bulging under their tight-fitting shirts, and both of the guys were sporting fresh high-and-tight buzz cuts. The taller one had dirty blond hair, and a clean shaven face, and the slightly shorter one had dark hair and a dark, neatly trimmed mustache and goatee. Both men had gorgeous, piercing blue eyes..they were incredibly handsome. Of course, I only had a few seconds to take all this in as they quickly moved towards me. Both of the men were carrying their medical bags and already had blue latex gloves on their hands.
The taller one said "Hey there bud. How you doing?"
I looked up at both of them with a glare. Now I was just angry.
"I'm fine," I said. "I don't need any help."
"Well," the shorter guy said. "Would you mind if we just check things out real quick, bud? Make sure you're ok?"
"Really I'm fine," I said defiantly. "This is all a mistake."
The shorter EMT said, "Well man, the cops told us you might have hurt yourself bud, we just want to make sure everything's ok...you thinking about hurting yourself at all now bud?"
"No," I said. "Really, I'm fine. Please. I don't need any of this!"
"It's ok bud, we understand," The taller EMT said. "We just need to get you checked out real quick and make sure everything's cool. Why don't you just stand up for us, ok?"
Before I had a chance to say anything else, or even really to think, both men reached down on either side of me and clasped my arms. All of a sudden, looking at the two men, I felt something inside of me give in. I wanted to resist them but seeing how strong and swift they were I felt even more helpless and some part of me decided to give into their control. They pulled me up from my spot on the floor to my feet. As I stood up, I felt a bit dizzy. They kept a hold on my arms and guided me towards the door of the bedroom.
"Really..," I started to say. "I'm...I'm fine.."
I felt really strange. Helpless and embarrassed all at the same time. I didn't want to face my roommate and the police on the other side of the door, I didn't want to talk to anybody, but as the two EMTs guided me through the door and into the next room I realized that everyone had left except for one police officer who was standing by the door. My roommate and the original cops must have moved out into the hall or something, because nobody was around.
Then I noticed something else..
The furniture in our small apartment living room had been moved. The couch and chair were pushed up against the wall and now in the middle of the room on the floor was some sort of medical furniture on wheels. It looked almost exactly like a stretcher that you usually see in the back of an ambulance except it was narrower, only about 2 feet wide, and about six feet long, and it sat much lower to the ground than a normal stretcher. It looked like it was made of a metal frame with a thin, dark green vinyl mattress lining the top. At the top of it was a square brace with two panels which were parallel to each other. I began to get a little confused. Then I noticed something that began to make me really nervous. Across the top of the vinyl mattress lay a mess of what looked like heavy, thick, brown leather restraints. I had heard about people being restrained in psychiatric units in hospitals and in movies and TV before but I had never really thought about it actually happening.
I gulped hard.
"Whats...Whats that? What's going on?"
The EMT's didn't answer right away, but kept their hold on either side of me. I saw the taller one, who was on my right nod his head towards the cop that was standing at the door. He was a young cop, I had seen him come in earlier with the first two who had arrived, but he had stayed back and kept quiet earlier. Now he came toward us and I got a better look at him. He was about the same height as the taller EMT and had a dark brown buzz cut and neatly trimmer beard. He also looked to be incredibly physically fit and was wearing a tight-fitting, all black police uniform, a heavy, thick leather duty belt, and similar polished side-zip leather boots to the one's the EMT's were wearing. As he walked toward us I could hear the leather of his belt and boots creak and his key ring jingle. He seemed to be coming towards me unusually quickly, like something was wrong.
"What..," I said again over another hard gulp. "What's going on?! I'm fine!"
The cop came over and grabbed me by my wrists. Before I could even blink, he had pulled out a pair of handcuffs and was cuffing my wrists together in front of me! "What the hell..why are you doing this?!" I screamed. The taller EMT spoke now, with a stern, but somehow strangely persuasive voice. "Its OK, bud, just relax for us, we need you to calm down. We're just gonna get you checked out."
As soon as the cop cuffed both of my hands, the EMTs swiftly lifted me onto the low stretcher and leaned me back. It was all happening faster than I could even think. All three men worked so swiftly, the next thing I knew I was lying on my back on the low stretcher, with the cop pressing down on me, holding my upper body down to the stretcher. I tried to protest as they were moving me. "I told you I'm FINE!" I said. "This is ridiculous, what are you doing?!"
The other EMT spoke this time, "Just calm down bud. Relax. We need you to relax for us.."
Now I was completely freaking out. As the cop was holding me down on my back, the shorter EMT began strapping my ankles into the leather restraints! I could see now that there was a set of leather ankle cuffs attached to a larger brown leather strap, the strap was stretched across the lower part of the stretcher just about in line with where my legs reached. Higher up on the stretcher, near my thighs was another leather strap buckled around the stretcher, this one had two smaller cuffs attached to it, one on either side of me. As the shorter EMT was strapping my ankles down, the taller one moved around to the side of me and reached under me, pulling away some of the mess of leather straps. The cop kept holding me down firmly. I tried to push up against him but he was entirely too strong. The whole ordeal was becoming more embarrassing by the second. I tried to kick my legs out, but the shorter EMT was holding them down equally as tight, and quickly bucked the two thick, heavy leather cuffs over my ankles, around my work-boots which were still on. He buckled each strap down TIGHT with one strong, swift motion. I couldn't believe how efficiently these men worked.
"Guys, PLEASE!" I could hear myself beginning to beg. I was becoming more scared and embarrassed every second. "Calm down man. We really just need you to relax, Brad," said tall EMT.
The shorter EMT reached underneath my arms while the cop was holding me down, he buckled a heavy, thick brown leather strap around my upper chest, just underneath my pecs..he pulled up on the strap for a minute and said "bud, I need you to take a deep breath for me." I opened my mouth to say "what!? why!?" but as soon as I breathed in, he buckled the strap down and moved down to my waist, where he buckled a second heavy leather strap tightly down across my waist, just below my belly button. "OK," the short EMT said, lets get his hands down. As he said this, the cop unlocked my handcuffs and the taller EMT walked around to the left side of me right next to where the cop was standing..as soon as i felt the cold metal handcuffs come off, I felt the strong, warm hands of both EMT's wrap around each of my wrists. Before I could even utter another word of protest, they were tightly strapping each of my wrists down into the cuffs at either side of me. Each of the men quickly slipped a finger between the cuffs and my wrists. The tall one said "good circulation. he's all set." "Yep," the other one replied. The cop backed up and left through my front door, closing it behind him.
By now I was starting to breath heavily. This was scaring me. In just under two minutes I had been led from my bedroom and strapped down to some kind of low stretcher and in my own living room and had barely been able to put up a fight! What was happening?!
"Woah, woah OK bud, calm down for me," said the shorter EMT.
"What…What is…" I gasped. "WHAT is going on?! Why are you doing this to me!?"
Still the EMT's didn't seem to answer any of my questions directly, which aggravated me even more! The shorter EMT said "just relax bud, we need to get you checked out right now, and make sure everything is ok. Just calm down..take some deep breaths.."
I was full-on hyper ventilating, i began sweating right through my tank top and my forehead was dripping..
"OK, the taller EMT said, he's getting hyper on us."
The shorter EMT reached down into his medical bag and came up with a pair of scissors. He wasted no time cutting my wifebeater right off me, with a long slice right up the middle and two snips around my arms. Before i could blink I was now shirtless, strapped down with these two EMT's beginning to unbuckle my pants!
"What…What are you DOING!? Stop this!" I gasped. I was beginning to feel completely hysterical!
The room started to spin. "No!" I said. "This isn't happening…this CAN'T be happening.. Help me!"
The EMT's were talking louder now. "Just RELAX bud…its OK. You're gonna be ok. We're gonna help you..we just need you to calm down now bud." I could feel their hands all over me, pulling my jeans down now, I was lying, tightly strapped down in just my tight briefs. I could feel one of the EMT's cutting down the leg of my jeans, cutting them right off of me…while the other one walked around behind me and firmly pulled my head down flat onto the stretcher, placing it in between the two panels, which formed a head brace. I felt him pull another heavy leather strap across my forehead. "No..please don't do this!" I said…I could barely talk now, I was breathing heavily, my heart was racing, I was sweating like crazy and beginning to get incredibly dizzy.."
"BRAD.." I head the EMT say as he was standing over me. "BRAD…can you hear me bud!? Bud listen I need you to open your mouth for me…" Everything was beginning to get blurry. I felt him firmly grasp my jaw with one and, and pinch my nose shut with the other. I had to open my mouth to breathe and as soon as I did, I felt him insert a rubber mouthpiece into my mouth. It had a hole in the middle of it, and I could still breath through it. I felt the EMT strapping a second leather strap with a chin-cup attached to it around my chin and pulling it tight, so the mouth-guard was held firmly in my mouth.
I couldn't hold on any longer. I couldn't believe what was happening to me..all in a matter of minutes. Never in my life had I been placed in a more vulnerable, humiliating situation, and I was in my OWN apartment! The room began to spin even more and everything got dark. The last thing I heard was the taller EMT saying..uh, oh, he's going on us..Hold up.." And then everything went black.
To be continued...
